Halloween is the perfect excuse to revisit some of our favourite horror films, and what better way to celebrate than with five unforgettable women who helped make the genre iconic?
From resourceful final girls to supernatural outcasts, these characters have haunted our imaginations for decades. Grab your popcorn, dim the lights and let’s take a look!
1. Laurie Strode – Halloween (1978)
The original final girl! Played by Jamie Lee Curtis, Laurie Strode became a horror legend when she faced off against the seemingly unstoppable Michael Myers. Smart, determined and resilient, she helped establish the blueprint for generations of horror heroines.
2. Sidney Prescott – Scream (1996)
Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott brought a fresh twist to the final girl. Witty, courageous and capable of fighting back, Sidney survived Ghostface while navigating a world that seemed determined to turn her life into a slasher movie. She’s proof that knowing the horror rules doesn’t necessarily save you but it certainly helps!
3. Carrie White – Carrie (1976)
Poor Carrie White. Bullied at school and controlled by her deeply religious mother, Carrie’s life takes a terrifying turn when her telekinetic powers emerge. Sissy Spacek’s unforgettable performance makes Carrie both frightening and heartbreaking. Sometimes, the scariest monsters are created by the cruelty of others.
4. Nancy Thompson – A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Freddy Krueger might be the stuff of nightmares, but Nancy Thompson refuses to be his helpless victim. Played by Heather Langenkamp, Nancy uses her intelligence, courage and ingenuity to fight back against the dream-stalking killer. Who needs beauty sleep when you have to outsmart a supernatural murderer?
5. Nancy Downs – The Craft (1996)
No list of iconic horror women would be complete without a little witchcraft! Fairuza Balk’s Nancy Downs starts out as an outsider searching for belonging, but her newfound magical powers take her down a much darker path. With her gothic style, rebellious attitude and increasingly dangerous obsession with power, Nancy remains a defining icon of 1990s witchy cinema.
Happy Halloween! 🎃👻
Whether you’re rooting for a final girl, feeling sorry for a misunderstood outsider or cheering on a wicked witch, these five women prove that horror has always had some unforgettable female characters. So light a candle, put on your favourite spooky film and raise a glass to the women who make us scream!
