As an introvert, few situations sound more terrifying than a high school reunion.
A room full of people you haven’t seen in years. Endless small talk and questions about your career, relationships, children and life achievements. The pressure to appear successful and confident is overwhelming. It’s enough to make many of us suddenly remember an urgent appointment elsewhere or to just leave without talking to anyone.
That’s why the 1997 cult classic Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion remains surprisingly relatable. Beneath the outrageous fashion, hilarious misunderstandings and unforgettable dance scenes lies a story about two women navigating social anxiety, self-doubt and the fear of being judged.
I think Romy and Michele are accidental introvert survival experts. These are the lessons we learn from the movie.
Lesson 1: Everyone Feels Insecure Sometimes
Throughout the film, Romy and Michele worry obsessively about what their former classmates will think of them.
Most introverts know this feeling well. We often assume everyone else is confident while we’re the only ones feeling awkward. The truth is that many people walk into social situations carrying the exact same fears. They just hide them differently.
Lesson 2: Bring Your Safe Person
One reason Romy and Michele survive the reunion is simple: they do it together.
Having a trusted friend at a large gathering can dramatically reduce social anxiety. It gives you someone to talk to, someone to laugh with, and someone who understands when you need a break. Every introvert should consider bringing a “social wingperson” whenever possible.
Lesson 3: Stop Comparing Your Life to Everyone Else’s
The reunion becomes stressful because the characters compare themselves to everyone around them.
What is different from the 90s is that now Social media has made this even worse today. Someone is always earning more, travelling more, publishing more books, raising more children or seemingly living a more exciting life. What you are seeing online is someone’s ‘highlight reel’. All the things they brag about, most of the time the reality is much different. Your life doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s to be meaningful.
Lesson 4: Authenticity Is Less Exhausting Than Pretending
Without giving away too many spoilers, much of the film revolves around the temptation to create a more impressive version of reality. Introverts know how tiring this can be, like pretending to be more outgoing, more confident or more successful than you feel requires enormous energy. Authenticity may feel risky, but it’s usually far less exhausting.
Lesson 5: It’s Okay to Be Different
Romy and Michele never quite fit the mould expected by their classmates. Ironically, that’s what makes them memorable. Many introverts spend years trying to become more like everyone else.
Yet our differences are often our strengths. Thoughtfulness, observation, empathy and deep connections are qualities that deserve celebrating.
Lesson 6: You Don’t Need to Stay All Night
Here’s a lesson the movie doesn’t explicitly teach, but every introvert should remember:
You are allowed to leave and you don’t have to stay until the end of the party. You don’t even have to explain why you need some quiet time afterward. Protecting your energy isn’t rude. It’s self-awareness.
Final Thoughts
More than twenty-five years after its release, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion remains funny because it captures something universal: the desire to be accepted.
For introverts, the film offers an unexpected reminder that we don’t need to transform ourselves into extroverts to belong.
Sometimes the best survival strategy is simply showing up as yourself, even if you’re wearing pink, making awkward conversation and wondering if everyone else has life figured out.
But guess what…. (They probably don’t! .)
